Instructions To Play Backgammon

A Guide to Winning in Backgammon

The rapid game play of Backgammon can easily befuddle rookies and even seasoned players, and perhaps even more so if it is money play. It is therefore important for the newcomer early on, to stop relying on big rolls to try and win the game for him. The way to win is through good Backgammon strategic planning.

There are several ways of playing the game of course, but some of the most well tested and proven Backgammon tactics include the following.

A common mistake by most players is trying to bear off prematurely. While this can work sometimes, more than not it can hamper your entire game plan. Resist the temptation early in the game to try and move your checkers into the 1 or 2 spots. The reason is that by placing your pieces there, it effectively takes them out of your Backgammon strategy plan.

Suppose you did place your checkers there, and the time comes that you will need to construct a prime. Chances are you will be one or two checkers short because it is stuck in the 1 or 2 position.

Another crucial aspect of Backgammon, particularly in the early goings, is the allotment of your checkers on the board. This is something that new players do not pay attention to which is unfortunate, as the checker placements will determine the rolls you can utilize.

It is often said that if you are not sure of what to do in Backgammon, you should hit. It is true; hitting your opponent when the opportunity presents itself will immobilize him, giving you time to work your Backgammon strategy.

The double option is something new players are hesitant to use, because the stakes may seem too big. However, a quick look will show the proper times when it can invoked. If you are in a best of five and one game away from a loss, accept the double offer. Of course, if you are in the driver's seat, then do not offer the double.

A good player never rests on his laurels; once you have mastered a particular strategy, try others, which are continually cropping up. The key to success for a lot of the pro players is that they are always innovating. Sooner or later, the others will learn your Backgammon tactics, so always try to improve your game.

Also bear in mind that because the game relies on dice rolls, your progress may not move as fast as you like. Be patient. Oftentimes over eagerness can lead to defeat, so be patient, and follow your plan. By sticking to your Backgammon tactics, you will come out a winner.
