Backgammon 101 - Know the Backgammon Board
Fifteen White Checkers, Fifteen Black Checkers, Two White Dice, Two Black Dice, Two Shakers and One Doubling Cube. Looks familiar? If not, this is actually what you will find when you open the Backgammon board. There are boards that may have different colors, just to make it stylish but it works the same way, it also goes for the checkers as long as it has two distinct colors for the two players. It is also normal if you will only get one pair of dice, it will be more fun to share.
The backgammon board is composed of "points" which is a series of triangles. There are 24 of them, and there are four sections, which are called "quadrants". The player needs to take note of the number of points because this is necessary to place the checkers properly, although, the points are written at the side of the backgammon board.
In placing the checkers on the backgammon board, remember that the first point is located at the bottom right hand corner, the last point will be at the upper right hand corner, depending on where you and your opponent are sitting. The players should place two on point 24, five on point 13, three on point 8, and five on point 6. Do not forget that the points are counted depending on the position of each players so your point 24 should be on the opposite side as your opponent's point 24.
There will be a dice that has the numbers 2, 4, 18, 16, 32, and 64 on six sides which is called the Doubling Cube. This is used to double the stakes of the game, which may cost you some points also. Actually, this is only applicable when there is money at stake.
The backgammon board is divided into two parts: the inner board and the outer board. The inner board is the part of the backgammon board that is near you and the outer board will be the farthest half of the backgammon board. Obviously, your inner board will be you opponent's outer board, and vice versa. The game will be won by the person who will be able to place all of his checker on the board accordingly. You can "bear off" and remove your checkers from the board once all of them are in your section of your inner board. A player wins if he was successful in removing all of his checkers from the backgammon board.
